Hi, Mike

You seem to have accidentally pressed the "Caps Lock" key ... since I'm sure you aren't the sort who'd begin shouting in a loud voice as he walked into a room where a group of guys were smoking pipes (and maybe in some cases, cigars) and chatting among one another, I know you'll want to press that key a second time in order to type your messages in a normal voice.

BTW ... welcome to BoB ...

Some of the older gentleman find it easier on the eye's to see what we're typing and what they have typed.
I for one on some forums depending on there type style and size have used bold lettering and
a larger font. Personally, I don't care what size font one chooses to type in, as long as I can see it and read it.  :D

And to answer your question about pubs, nowadays I haven't a clue my friend.

If you need to make the print on a web page bigger for easier reading hold the CTRL key and hit the + key as many times as you need to to increase the font size to go smaller hit the - key

Many McMenamins will allow you to smoke outside if they have the seating available and those seats legally comply with Oregon law. I can't help you with a specific McMenamins in Portland. You could likely find a location via their website and ask about their outdoor smoking options. http://www.mcmenamins.com

Another thing about McMenamins, locals enjoy complaining about the poor service and food from these understaffed establishments, but many still frequent them.  :rabbit:

CARTAPHILUS AND BIG CASINO - - I AM AN OLD RADIO AND TV GUY - OWN AN ADVERTISING
AGENCY - HAVE BEEN IN THE MEDIA FOR OVER 40+ YEARS - STARTED WHEN I WAS A SOPH IN HIGH
SCHOOL. I WRITE A LOT OF TV AND RADIO COPY - IT'S ALL CAPS BECAUSE IT IS EASIER TO READ FOR
MYSELF AND ANNOUNCERS. I DON'T KNOW WHO CAME UP WITH CAPS IS SHOUTING - HOWEVER -
WHEN I SHOUT I USE LETTERS THAT ARE "BOLD" AND 34+ POINT SIZE!
LIKE BIG CASINO - IT MAKES IT EASIER FOR SOME OF US OLDER SMOKERS TO READ.

I DO APPRECIATE YOUR COMMENTS!

FRIENDS IN ALL WALKS OF LIFE WHO SMOKE PIPES - WE ARE A SELECT FEW - BEING AN OLD MARINE -
ONCE A MARINE - ALWAYS A MARINE - - - IT'S LIKE A BROTHERHOOD - THAT'S THE WAY I LOOK A BOB!
WE HAVE A TOBACCO EXCHANGE HERE - TWO LOCATIONS - MY FAVORITE IS IN EDMOND - THERE ARE
NUMEROUS MEN AND A FEW LADIES WHO COME IN - SMOKE PIPES AND CIGARS - WE HAVE SOME
GREAT CONVERSATION - INCLUDING POLITICAL DISCUSSIONS - THAT SOMETIMES GETS A LITTLE HEATED -
HOWEVER - WE ALWAYS HAVE A GOOD TIME AND RESPECT EACH OTHER. ARE THERE ANY SUBJECTS
THAT ARE NOT ALLOWED ON BOB?

SMOKING A BOWL OF F&K BLACK BAYOU MIST - IT'S A LATAKIA BLEND - VIRGINA - ORIENTAL - KENTUCKY
AND LA PERIQUE + LOADED WITH LATAKIA - - - A COOL SMOKE - GOOD FLAVOR & ROOM NOTE.

Putting my moderator hat on here, so please pay attention.

Welcome to the forum from the BoB moderator team. I think what the folks are trying to tell you is, write normally on public forums please. All caps and bullet point statements are annoying as hell. Please stop. Thank you.

Lets give Mike a warm welcome to the BOB and let him know that its what you say and not how you say it.
While I don't like someone shouting in my ear I don't mind caps if someone uses caps in a brief written message.
Especially if the writer has a good reason.

Having thought it over and having read the explanation in two topics, I have to agree with Bub in this case

others may, of course, disagree

Welcome Mike. The thought of sitting down with you for a conversation intrigues me. As one who prefers to print in caps I also have never understood the hatred people have for using them in type. It is simply easier to me. God willing you will not be chased off for being a simple gentlemen. Cheers.

Another mod commenting here...I think that when enjoying a forum that others have put together at great effort, over the years, that it is incumbent upon the guest or member to follow the preferred protocols on that site. I mean,  aside from the fact that caps stand for someone YELLING REALLY LOUD and most other members see it as being rude whether intended or not.

So please don't take this as harsh or intended in a mean way...but if you don't find yourself comfortable following the CUT THE CAPS line, maybe its because this site isn't a good match in terms of what you're looking for, etc. I mean, what...5000 or so other members don't have a problem with following standard behaviour. If it's too much for you to bear that says a lot.

Hope you can work it out.

There are a couple of good places in Portland. Rich's allows you to smoke inside, but don't expect to sit or drink. The drink thing is state law.

In Oregon City, Steve Books has his shop set up- House of Calabash. No smoking as far as I know, but worth the visit to listen to Mr. Books tell stories.

Good Morning Brothers Of Briar
The responses to the caps has been interesting - however - since I learned a long time ago as a Marine
Force Recon Special Forces & Radio and TV Combat Correspondent in Nam that there ware things worth
fighting for - and some things not worth fighting for - the right thing to do is to type the way most of the
BOB members do.
It's a beautiful day - 43 - however we have 3 storms headed our way - rain - ice and snow is forecast.
I am smoking my Radice Rind Poker Pipe - Seattle Pipe Club Mississippi River - one of my favorites -
pressed Virgina - kicked up with oriental - latakia and perique. If you haven't tried it - it's very good -
smooth - no bite - nice flavor - nice room note. I don't smoke a pipe for other people in the room -
however - it nice when other like the aroma. I have great memories of my Grandfather who lived to
86 - smoking his pipe on the front porch when I was 5 or 6 - don't know what tobacco is was - it did
smell great. My mother was born and raised in Australia - her father died when she was 6 - we only
have several photos of him - in one he is smoking his pipe - so I am carrying on the pipe smoking
tradition of both my Grandfathers. It's Friday - make it a Great Weekend.
God Bless All Our American Military (except the commander & chief) and especially all that have paid
the ultimate price for our freedom!

In Pennsylvania they've set a criteria for certain bars to allow smoking. My wife works at one and business took a big jump because of it. I've not been to many of these smoking bars but all have been light cigars only and forget pipes. I'm not a drinker so bars are not my thing.

There's a number of high end cigar/pipe stores opening with décor nicer than most bars, not to mention the quality of patrons. Hated by 99.99% of the people and we still find ways to enjoy our tobacco. There's many here in Pittsburgh and one just opened 5 miles away from me that's amazing, blowing away any bar I've patronized in the last 30 years. It's also stocked with the finest of spirits in private boxes that are enjoyed free to friends gathering for the social night out. We adapt and change because we love our pipes!

Thanks, I didn't know that.

Dragon Slayer - you are right - we have some Pipe & Cigars stores in OKC that have excellent
smoking rooms - we have one here called Tobacco Exchange which is excellent - we have a
group of 10 to 15 that come in pretty regular - very nice - leather chairs - we talk about
everything under the sun - very interesting and relaxing.
Smoking Skandinavik Full Aroma this morning - have had rain - sleet - snow - it's a beautiful day.

God Bless America & All Our Military World Wide - Especially Those Who Have Paid The Ultimate
Price For Our Freedom!
