I wonder why FM doesn't want it implemented. Even if it's a statistically important thing, there ought to be a way to keep the figure somewhere out of sight while never showing it...

Actually, that would be OK with me. It's not the FACT that the posts are
counted that bugs me. Rather it's the fact that the count is
displayed, which motivates a flood of substance-free posts that jack up the post counts at the expense of actual quality in the content. It's a quantity over quality driver, with the result that you have nuisance posts showing up in every thread, irrespective of whether the posters have anything positive or substantive to contribute.
It would be fairly easy to just hide the post count everywhere. It wouldn't be different from the various fields that show up under the user's avatar now, like Age, Location, Tobacco, Pipe, etc....except that it would be accessible only by admins...
- ...although it would be great if users could turn it off for themselves. Then only the disillusioned souls who think post counts actually mean anything would use it...immediately identifying themselves as such to others.
Anyhow, in the way the feature has been implemented in phpBB3, it's my understanding that the post count feature actually would be disabled on any forums the admin selects. Posts made there simply wouldn't add to the user's total.
I've seen arguments that assert, "Oh...you want to make the admins some kind of brain police who limit what people post." Of course, that's just silly. There's nothing in the proposal about limiting the number or frequency of posts. Those who are inclined to post drivel or trivia will be just as free to do so with the post counts disabled as they were before they were disabled. The only difference is that there would be less motivation for them to do so.
To whatever extent a displayed post count provides that motivation, there'll be fewer substance-free posts on the board. And to whatever extent those who post such stuff are inclined to do it anyway, nothing will change. They just won't be rewarded for it with a numerical indicator that has nothing to do with the quality of their contributions, but merely shows how many times they can hit the "Send" button.
I still can't understand why Forumotion doesn't implement it. Obviously the vast majority of their users want it. In fact, some of the comments in the poll thread explicitly say that they DON'T want those trivial spam posts in their stats. In at least one case, the amount of trivial posts has been high enough to overflow the post counter. That pretty well kills any statistical value the post count has.
I dunno...it's a real head-scratcher.
