Well, what MORE could one want?
A friend of mine welded together a metal coffee table for me a long time ago, and put a glass top on it.  It was pretty basic. Unique.  Heavy as hell.  Cold.  Awkward.  But--very functional.   Eventually I found a perfectly-sized, relatively inexpensive hand-made wood piece here in town that will probably be the last piece of furniture I ever abandon.  It's carefully put together, slightly rustic (but sophisticated) and turns into a lap table if needed.  The metal coffee table was hastily bought by the local scrapper for $8 (scrap weight) and I think he still uses it in his office.   <img class="emojione" alt="?" title="" src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/emojione/assets/png/1f937.png?v=2.2.7"/>   Everyone wins, everyone's happy.

Royal Yacht was one I never got around to trying,
prolly because I heard "Royal Yuck" so often.
Back in 2008, when all the Dunhill blends
disappeared from American shelves, I
decided I oughtta put some away before
it was too late.  I bought eight tins.
They'll be five years old in December.
Still haven't tried it yet.  :suspect:

RY is a blend that seems very difficult to pin down. The first time I tried it I thought it tasted like 1792. I have not tasted tonkin in it since. Now I get a strong, smooth Virginia with very little sweetness. The more I smoke it the more I like it. I have never tasted anything even remotely fruity!?

Does anyone have any idea what it is actually flavored with?

Todd
Other than a barely detectable amount of tonquin, no. Something fruity.

Can anyone tell me where I can get this "Royal Yuk" blend? Is it a special bulk blend made here in the US? or over in the EU? All I can find is the "Dunhill" Royal Yacht which is one truly ROYAL blend
BTW Kyle, I smoked Dunhill Red's for around ten years when I reduced my pipe smoking and Royal Yacht DOES NOT TASTE like them! They had a much lighter, hay/grass Bright Va taste rather than the darker/fuller taste of the Va's in Royal Yacht. Just my experience for whatever that's worth

RY is one of those Duinhill blends I never tried back before they went out of circulation.

Now have a couple tins I need to "get a round tuit" when the time is right.

Cheers,

RR

Maybe the Dunnie Reds don't taste like Royal Yacht, but one of their cigarette offerings does. Black box? White box? Silver box? Pink and yellow polka-dot box? No matter. The intense flood of memories I got was unmistakable. It's not exactly the same, but similar enough to instantly and intensely recall some crazy times from about 15 - 20 years ago. I'm not about to go out and do a direct, personal comparison with RY and whatever Dunhill cigarette I think are a close match, either...no thank you.

I also remember back in my early not-so-serious piping days being out of Carter Hall for the Grabow I always had on me, and crumpled up a Nat Sherman cigarette (back when they were all circus colors and had gold filters) and stuffed it inside...it wasn't bad. I don't think I'd appreciate it as much today, but back then, I wasn't too fussy.

I'll say from my personal experience that RY grows on you over time. When I first tried it in the early '90s it was a no go. When I tried it again after the reindroduction of Dunhill I was still meh. Finally last year after Bla's review I gave it another go and I got it. I love the stuff now.

I wonder is it's a blend that's more pleasant to older, deadened senses? Scary thought but possible.

I had a Borkum Riff smoker tell me the same thing.

I'd take RY over BR in a heartbeat. Not a huge hurdle to clear.

totally a love or hate blend. i got none of the cig taste you got though. had a few more bowls when i was camping, in a cob, in briar, in a meer. i liked it in all three with the meer being the best. haven't found the perfect pipe for it yet though. i think the right briar could really open up that flavor that is on the outside, that you can barely reach consistently but is there. i have that issue with silver flake as well. i only actually like silver flake in a meer, but that could be because i haven't dedicated a pipe to it. meh. more RY for me and more SF for you! thanks for the added review, it's always interesting to see two different tastes. if only i was actually articulate and could describe it better

Try Silver Flake in a true conical style bowl (ala Dublin). It sings. If you don't like it after that, we've got a trade to make. ;)

Since we are changing the subject of this thread (Royal yacht) I'll offer that you should try McC's FM2000 in a nice big wide pot

I didn't hate Royal Yacht, and I didn't love it.  I did smoke the whole bowl, top to bottom...stuff I hated got ejected post-haste 1/4 - 1/2 the way through.   This might be a huge assumption, but for any of us, from fussy to easier to please, there comes a time when we figure out what we're into.   When I try things these days, I can even take it a step further and determine, "Ah, this would be better with more humidity...in colder seasons...in a smaller/larger pipe..." and fix the fuzz in the picture with a bit of fine tuning.  This one tuned in fine, but just spoke in Spanish.    Which is funny, considering where E lives and the fact I speak alright es-pan-yol, but...I'm sure you fellas get me.

In my youth, I smoked whatever tobacco I could get.  I couldn't afford to be choosy.  Believe me when I say I've smoked the worst of the worst.   Kite.  Drum.  Tops.  Bali Shag.   Nothing will scorch the nasal passages and cook the tongue when stuffed and smoked in a pipe quite like 'em.   Especially when dryer than cornflakes.   ;)

RY is far from the worst tobacco.

Kyle, have you test drove Royal Yacht in a cob? I enjoy RY in a cob moreso than any other blend I have smoked in cobs. I'm not exactly why they seem to compliment each other so well, but I have 2 MM Country Gentleman cobs with Walker Briar Works Forever Stems that I exclusively smoke RY in. They seem to be just the right size for the nicotine content this blend delivers. Maybe the moisture absorption of the cob, affects the flavor in a positive way, especially during the last third of the bowl.

I suppose the fact that RY has a somewhat heavier casing, most likely is the primary reason it doesn't agree with some folks.

Geez, Dutch...call me out why don't ya? Do I really HAVE to try it in a cob?

I put the RY I tried in one of my best smoking pipes. It performed beautifully. The humidity of the smoke was ace, the temperature was as cool as could be...and I know the briar on this particular pipe is delightfully sweet.

There's a 'tude of RY that ain't gonna pass muster with the Weiss Palate.

Lol, the reason I mentioned it, is because for me they compliment each other so well. I have tried Samuel Gawith BBF in one of my cobs, and could tell no difference whatsoever compared to briar. Like I said, I suppose it's the casing that makes the difference, and most likely what is not agreeing with the "Weiss Palate."
