Hi,

I was listening to a podcast about pipes the other day and the cost of pipe tobacco in the USA was mentioned. As I recall, varied from about $5 an oz (28g) upwards.

In various places, I've seen US pipe smokers complain at the high cost of tobacco.

In the UK, we pay nearer $10 for an oz. The last tin of 50g (under 2oz) of Peterson's I bought a few days ago was £11.30 ($18.05), which is just over $10 per oz.

I'm curious, what do people pay in other countries?

It would help if you can use the online currency converters to work in, say, US $ per oz (50g is 1.764 oz, if you buy in oz.)

Pick an 'every day' tobacco, no something saved for high days and holidays.

Thank you.

Brian

If you visit one of the webtailers you will see the price here.  4noggins.com or pipeandcigars.com would be place that will show you the prices.  But, the cheapest mainline blender ounces are a bit under $2.50.  Prices vary by blender. But you can find good tobacco in the under $2 area too.

Thank you Geoff, those are in line with Podcast.

I had looked at some US sites, thankfully we share an (almost) common language so I can hunt around them but get lost in the other languages.

To make you US smokers feel a bit happier, the example I gave at £11.30 is $9.05 on 4noggins.com. I've inc. our taxes. the current exchange rate is, I believe $1.6 = £1 so £11.30 is $18.08, ie nearly double.

Moral of the story, if you are visiting the UK, bring a stock with you so you don't run out ;-)

I can see why you guys organised a little party in Boston and I don't blame you.

Two countries -- separated by a common language. :)

Oh My!

Well here it is referred to as social engineering by "experts" who save us repeatedly from ourselves.

It is also referred to as a "sin tax" and the real reason is that, when they've again spent all the money, it the least damaging to their political lives to grab more with "protecting us" as their lofty goal.

We just had an attempt at such which probably won't get out of committee. Had it passed there would have been an added $50/lb tax on smoking tobacco.

I know prices vary from province to province across Canada, but I know I pay $47.50 CDN per 50 gram tin. I think that equates to $45 USD.

That is more than double what people in UK pay, and almost 5 times as expensive as the US.

We here in the USA enjoy, for the most part, relatively cheap prices on tobaccos....all of which is soon to change with the internet sales tax and the ACA health care mandate that smokers pay a higher rate than non-smokers...course they lump pipe tobacco in with cigarettes and everything else.  FDA plans to regulate it as it is a drug (nicotine).

So I say stock up the cellar as fast as you can and then sit back and order only what you really need, monthly, as you watch prices rise and act/order accordingly.

That's my game plan.

That is eye wateringly expensive! Some pipe smoker must really have upset one of your politicians!

I was hoping to see some prices from a good range of countries- perhaps 'mainland Europe' (we Brits don't all think of ourselves as being proper Europe, not least due to the fact the 'sin taxes' are generally lower there).

Perhaps there aren't many (any) members from Europe.

Even here in the US, depending on where you buy it, prices are pretty steep. Example: GLPease, shopping Mall, Sacramento, California:

Socialism ain't cheap!

Looking at "day to day" tobacco on that site, it is your local sales tax which is the problem. I compared Peterson with prices here- less tax you pay about $13 where I'd pay £11.30 or about $18 inc tax (I don't know all the tax make up so can't deduct it, sales tax equivalent is 20% but there is also duty). At least you can buy 'out of state' mail order, we can't do that. I can't order tobacco from Europe, although I can bring it back when travelling.

I saw a programme on TV yesterday evening about Greece. Some Greek tobacco growers get 2 euro (about $2) a kilo for their tobacco.
They didn't seem to be doing to well so someone must be making a killing.

By law, if you buy anything tax free via mail-order in the US, you have to pay all applicable taxes with your federal/stat income tax return.
for California, I think based on this:
http://www.boe.ca.gov/pdf/boe851.pdf

You are looking at a 30% tobacco tax, + applicable sales tax (currently 8%) in Sacramento County. These 8% btw are not included in the online prices I showed you.

It's for the kids, so taxes are a good thing. A few years back, I saw a report about diaper training for new parents, paid for with...
tobacco taxes...

Flawed thinking in my book.

One, I didn't know new parent are too stupid to change a baby.
Two, nurses at the hospital will include such instructions in the fees already charged.
Three, I'm sure their stated reason for nicking smokers had nothing to do with diaper changing.

That was just a flawed feel good story that should be looked at with suspicion.

Diaper changing isn't rocket science.

I will add to that....bulk tobacco runs $0.75/gram to $1.00/gram here in Alberta, depending on where you shop. Sadly, it was $42 for a 50 gram tin up until about 8 weeks ago, and based on history, we can anticipate another similar increase in about 24 months. I believe that here in Alberta, we have the highest prices in Canada, but not by a whole lot. The sad thing is that 90% of that is tax.....and tax on tax on tax on tax.

I was kidding. The part about the diaper training is true, though...
