My first pipe....A weekend DIY project

Yeah, kind of like burning livestock...its bad. Lol, wish I was turning it. I'm doing it with handtools, just taking off a milimeter at a time & test fitting it. Actually got the antler cut down to a band, & have it epoxied in place now, going to give it 24 hours to set up before I start shaping...

My first pipe....A weekend DIY project

Well, got a mortise carved out of the shank, & I machined the antler to match, I think this is going to work out quite nicely when finished:

Here are some pictures showing what I am trying to do:

My first pipe....A weekend DIY project

Well, I got some more basic shaping done. I thinned down the walls so its not so husky, & I began refining the shape of the shank. This pipe kit came with rather thin shank walls in my opinion, so now I don't have very much faith in its strength. I want to do something to build up the thickness...

My first pipe....A weekend DIY project

Yeah, I hear you kyle. At the point I am at right now, I am just going slowly with some 120 grit on a dremel grinding disk, just removing miniscule amounts of material at a time, that way I can judge the strength & integrity of the wood carefully as I go.

My first pipe....A weekend DIY project

Right now them stem is diamond shaped, but I think I'm going to shape it into an inverted teardrop, haven't seen that done before, so should prove interesting.

My first pipe....A weekend DIY project

Thanks for the kind words guys! I think that if I had a table-mount belt sander, I'd be able to remove a lot more material in a much more rapid manner while still keeping good control of the pipe. Probably would be a lot easier (& safer) than using the orbital sander like I was today. lol, I...

My first pipe....A weekend DIY project

I made a little more progress before closing down the pipe shop for the night. I have already noticed several mistakes I made, although I believe that I'll be able to repair them enough for the pipe to be servicable. On a side note, while the draft hole was perfectly positioned in the...

My first pipe....A weekend DIY project

Lol, yeah, its just about realtime. I had taken pictures of the first 3 steps before I decided to take a smoke break & get some lunch. Figured its a good time to post my progress & see what everyone thought. I'll keep the updates up every hour or two.

My first pipe....A weekend DIY project

Here I've put the wood rasps to use, further roughing in the general shape, & smoothing out the rough edges left by the coping saw: In case any of you were curious as to what my goals were for pipe style, I really haven't chosen one, I am just going to try to see where the wood takes me. I...

My first pipe....A weekend DIY project

Here I have roughed in the basic shape with the coping saw: I have never tried to carve a pipe before, & I welcome any suggestions or comments. I don't expect that this pipe will look very nice at all, seeing as I have no clue what I am doing. Kyle's recent adventures in pipe carving piqued...

My first pipe....A weekend DIY project

I finished the work week fairly bummed out, I've been putting in about 14 hours a day, & this morning my Doc diagnosed me with degenerative disc disease. I really just wanted to crawl in bed with a bottle of whiskey & make the day go away. My wife saw how down I was, so when I got home from...

Just placed my first order for snuff, excited to try it out.

Well, so far I am doing fine with them. I've learned about the different grind sizes, I only ordered 6 different types of snuff, but there is enough variation among those six to get a general idea of how wide the selection available really is. Some of the snuff is just generally a beast in the...

    What's your pocketknife?

I carry the Fairbarin Applegate combat folder, its a great knife, has never let me down.

Just placed my first order for snuff, excited to try it out.

Well, I got the snuff a week or so ago, & I must say, I am really enjoying the McCrystal's mild Lemon, & the Winston S.S. a lot. I have tried the others, but I have almost finished a tin of the mild lemon, & it just seems to grow on me more & more every day. It has a nice nic hit, its easy on...

    Meer question.

Its been quite cold here in KY lately. I was gifted 2 neer meer's in the last week (uploading pics as we speak), & I too had heard to avoid smoking in cold temps due to the risk of cracking from temperature fluctuations & uneven expansion of the porus meerschaum. Well, having imbibed maybe just...

    Stokkebye Bulls Eye Flake How?

So I finally got to try LBF. The previous smoke of the day was Escudo, so I was expecting something a little bigger, maybe a little more rough around the edges, but WOW, my expectations were dead wrong. I found escudo to be smooth & full of flavor, it had body yet was still extremely well...

    Barbary Coast

I was just gifted a tin of this the other day, very excited after reading the label. Also received C&D's Burley Flake #2, looking forward to comparing the two, but honestly, I am quite enamored with anything made by Mr. Pease at the moment. I think I'll just dry it out from the git-go though, so...

    GLP Haddo's Delight FLAKE

I was rather recently introduced to Haddo's, & the initial joy & novelty still haven't worn off. Its stout, flavorful, & has enough complexity to continue revealing more of itself over time without being overbearing or pretentious. I would be thrilled if I could get it in a flake. :cheers...
