    Topping/Casing Tobacco

FYI: Not ALL tobacco is cased with a spray of sugar and water. In fact I even avoid spraying my tobacco plants with plain water in order to avoid sun scald. (Drip irrigation is the way to grow.)

    Running from the Nicotine Monster

C'mon Dutch, you gotta be careful proceeding from the general to the specific. There are wimpy Burlies and there are potent Virginias.

    Inconsistencies

It may be difficult to quantify "different", but could you be a bit more specific, say a little different, different or very different. Some blending houses seem to have a history of blend variability and some brands have changed blenders so conceivably one batch could be old stock and the other...

    Tavern Tobaccos

Ol' Sam Gawith hisself gave me the idea that Laurel Flake was purdy close to St James Flake. I can't tell a difference 'tween 'em, but I ain't tellin' much. I know I don't know nothin' but have you tried Sam's Navy Flake?

    cutting v. rubbing out

Cutting flakes with scissors is quick and easy but I seem to get more flavor with finely rubbing my flakes. Actual approach depends on the arthritis activity in my hands at the time.

    PG problem with PA

Gilgawulf, fyi, here is another final note for you. The boiling point of propylene glycol is 372 F. The boiling point of nicotine is 474 F. I have toasted a few ounces of adulterated tobacco at 375 F in the oven and watched vapors out-gas for 20 minutes or so. This does change the tobacco more...

Don't forget S.G. Kendal Plug for a mild rather than wild smoke.

    Syrian vs. cyprian

Well, there is Syrian Latakia and then there's Syrian Latakia. Likewise there are Cyprian Latakias and there's Cyprian Latakias. I.e., there's variety within each genre. Or an analogous way to look at it: there are Red Virgina variations and Bright Virginia variations.

Question about age and different tobaccos

Initially I was going to reply that while Oriental tobaccos are said to be Virginia varietals they don't seem to develop with aging by themselves. However, you provoked my curiosity to the point I went through the cellar sniffing the several different Oriental blenders on hand despite my...

    What's a good morning smoke?

Matt, what do you like to smoke? Ordinarily here it is a Virginia in the mornings. For a needed wake up call it'll be Stonehaven for me, Brown Rope for the wife.

help me muddler! (and other greybeards...)

You may want to consider C&D 525: Red Virginia Flake and C&D 517R: Bright Virginia Ribbon as they are distinct and representative, available in bulk and 1 oz samples.

    What Direction?

    In a word: DOWN!

Can anyone recommend a strong perique blend?

If you are looking for a Per/Va I'll mention C&D 967: Exclusive. Some might say this deserves a warning rather than a recommendation, but it has its place.

    VA Va/Per Burley Oriental

My favorite Va/Per/Bur/Or is C&D 417P Night Train!
