Engine 99 and my good friend and our brother Aristokles

Not trying to knock your love for Engine 99, but I wanted to add my own observation. Engine 99 is half Red Odessa and half unpressed Pirate Kake. I am crazy for Red Odessa. Much less Latakia, and the focus is squarely on the Va. The Perique is a major player, at least in bag/jar aroma. The...

Pipes You Want But Don't Want To Pay For

No I wasn't saying that at all. I just was reading along in the thread and posted this as my recent, unfortunate observation. In fact, the behavior is from another forum. I'm not a frequent BoB poster, and I've never experienced anything untoward here.

Pipes You Want But Don't Want To Pay For

The flipside of this is getting uncivil reactions from forum members for no better reason than you happen to have pipes that cost a little more and maybe a decent cellar too. I come to a web forum to share a common interest with people of a like mind. I don't care if you smoke 20 year old Balkan...

Favorite blends - how much is "enough"?

I have about half a dozen tobaccos that I have two pounds of each cellared. I haven't found the blend I felt like going higher than two pounds yet. I still have a lot of virgin unsmoked tobaccos, so I don't want to get too crazy and find out that I have four or five favorite tobaccos that I...

A pipe rack for large pipes !

that keyhole rack is fine for the nosewarmers you smoke, but if you have any squat bulldogs, full bents, or large Burley pipes like I have, the profile rack will accommodate them all. that first part is meant in good humor btw :D

    Latakia Percentages

my guess would be about 70% in Ten Russians, and I'm pretty sure I read that Odyssey had 60%.

If you could only have 3 pipes, how would you dedicate them?

two for Lat blends and one to split duty between Burleys and Va's

    Hearth & Home Sierra Nevada

The first is Sierra Nevada, which was made for the 2011 West Coast Pipe Show. This is a unique mixture of three quality Virginias, great Orientals, Perique and a bit of earthy Burley to make a one-of-a-kind rich blend that’s hard to describe. A portion of the proceeds will go to the continued...

    Not Heavy Latakia Blends

Sorry, I answered your topic instead of your post. Same answer, add Presbyterian Mixture and Red Rapparee.

    Not Heavy Latakia Blends

Penzance is NOT heavy. Pretty much any McC Lat blend, Esoterica And So To Bed, C&D Red Odessa.

I just tried Pipeworks & Wilke's "Nut Brown Burley."

my initial impression of Burley was that it was dull and that you had to be some old guy who had lost his nerve for big flavors. That quickly corrected itself, thankfully. I'm a Lat blend guy, but I usually smoke Burley a couple nights a week. It sings to me in a way that Va mixtures never have...

Squadron Leader - First, second, third, etc., runners up?

for a middle of the road medium English like Squadron Leader I would pick 3 Oaks Syrian. Syrian instead of Cyprian, so they don't taste similar, but they are very similar in fullness and I think that 3OS has a better flavor profile. IMO.

How soon to use from the production date?

Burleys smoke any time. Lat blends, strong ones cellar well, lighter ones smoke fresh. Va's, get 'em as old as you can stand to wait!
