Latakia, Syria in the news, and pronunciation

Brit here: I pronounce Latakia as /lætəkiːə/ lat-uh-KEY-uh as above. Never heard a Brit miss off the final "uh" though. And Syrians are foreign, so what would they know?

Learning the Different Types of Tobacco

Have a word with Rich of 4Noggins and I'm sure he'll send you samples of each of the pure tobaccos normally used for blending. you can smoke them individually (although one or two are really just condiments) then you can experiment yourself on mixing the flavours and compare them with known...

    The Center Punch Technique

There's been a thread running on this for some time on the pipe forum I moderate. We've all tried it with the vast majority finding it successful and making a switch to this method, including me. Inevitably there will be a cut it won't work as well with, and flakes might well fit the bill. It...

Wanted: Pics of Your Smoking Dens/Man Caves

Here's where I'm allowed to smoke: The first two are of my office downstairs (I've got rid of the fish tank, thankfully) and the third is of my smoking den upstairs, where I have music and tv too.

    Hanging at the B&M - Helping N00Bs

At first I thought this was going to be a thread about lynchings, but sadly, no. I'm with Chris - we have very little in the way of B&Ms here so most of us have B&M envy.

    Pear wood pipes?

Another forum is currently running a Mr Brog thread and the general consensus is that for the money they're a great buy. Although they have a website it sells through an Amazon store: http://astore.amazon.com/mrbrog00-20 Greater choice here.

    On-going Restoration Projects

George that's a pipe I'd buy! Beautifully redesigned. And this is a real compliment because I usually don't like pipes which are a mix of smooth and rusticated. Stunning!

    Growley Ramses

I've got to be honest, of all pipe shapes the Oom Paul and poker are my least favourite (I include Rameses in the term Oom Paul) -- but this, I love. Beautifully designed and executed, and I love the grain and finish. First class!

    That is truly terrible.

    A flash mob

    There's something about a flash mob which gets me every time. This was great. Try this: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/SXh7JR9oKVE" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" frameborder="0" loading="lazy" allowfullscreen></iframe>

New Smoker, What am I supposed to taste?

I always avoid cleaning my pipes when Mission Control is about as she moans about the smell (which even I find unpleasant), so the answer to your question must be "yes, I do". Always chuck your pipe cleaners straight away too -- they can be silent killers.

    Can you count to 100?

Although I'm about to be 57 I'm lucky in that I've always kept current with music. This guy is a legend. Thanks for posting.

    Gas prices

Sorry, I don't know how I missed it. As for putting up with it, we have no choice I'm afraid.

    Gas prices

I thought I'd make you all feel better by telling you what we pay over here in England. Converted to $US the cost is $8.95 per gallon, of which over 85% is tax. I hope you all feel better now... :(

    Elephant's Knee

Interestingly, many posts go from "eeeeeuuuwww" to "aaaahhhh" in a short space. My reaction was the same initially, not sure whether I liked it. I should know better - like a good tobacco, a good pipe might take a while to get to know. This took 30 seconds for me to like, and another 15 for me...

Just found this, looks pipe smokers can't win either!

"Pipes are often reusable" - has anyone ever seen a single use pipe? Serious question. I will NEVER get cervical cancer.
