    Mike Hagley Is Still Alive

I am glad to see the group is still around and thriving. I joined BOB 9 years ago, and just saw that I haven't posted since 2014. After selling most of my collection a few years ago, I lost interest in pipes. I had been collecting for nearly 50 years, and just realized that I didn't smoke...

    Rare Caminetto finds on eBay

The Chinese are buying everything, and driving up prices. In the past I have only sold in the US, much to the chagrin of Canadian and EU buyers. Going forward I will sell to anyone anywhere. I have thousands of tins of tobacco, and you can be sure that if Chinese want to buy them, I will sell...

    Rare Caminetto finds on eBay

Yeah, that's normal.  The fact is there aren't really all that many left stamped Ascorti/Radice that haven't been burned out, not taken care of, or what have you. Typically, you'll see the same shapes over and over too.  No one sells the good shapes all that often.  Personally, one of my...

    Group Sizing?

More than likely Iwan Ries is using that terminology because the pipe collecting hobby has been using Dunhill sizing for many years to describe a pipe size. Other makers use L, XL, XXX, Maxima, and other terms as part of their stamping to designate pipe sizes and price points. If someone says a...

    Rare Caminetto finds on eBay

It's funny how Caminetto prices have virtually tripled in the last several years.

    Group Sizing?

The Dunhill group designation was to identify the size of the ebauchon used to make the pipe. The ebauchons were graded by size from 1 to 4. Obviously ODA were made from larger blocks. The group size had nothing to do with the bowl capacity, but obviously one would expect the larger the group...

    $500 GBD?

You guys should have been around when I sold most of my collection in 2011. I sold about three dozen 9438 and 9242. One guy bought about 500 of my pipes and it seems like I got $100 a piece for those. Of course I could have gotten more selling one at a time, but when one person wants to buy...

Can anyone recommend a good pipe refurbisher?

That is puzzling. I know he does fine work, but not aware of the issues you mention. I wish George well, and hope the fellow you mentioned gets his pipes back. Mike

Can anyone recommend a good pipe refurbisher?

George Dibos. I haven't had any contact with him for a couple years, and not sure where he is living now. He is a real craftsman. I think someone else previously posted a link to him at precisionpiperepair. Mike

    Dunhill group sizes

I have ODAs from the 1920s and 1930s and they are certainly as large as any ODA in the same shape from the 1960s and later.  There are a couple ODA, 806 comes to mind, that were never large pipes, and about the same size as a group 4 LB from pre 1970.  An LB would today be a group 5 or possibly...

    Dunhill group sizes

The group size is the size of the ebauchon, not the finished bowl size. I never can spell that word, but you know I am talking about the block of wood. :D  Mike

    British pipe; who made 'em?

I know GBD shapes, having owned several hundred over the years. I also have GBD shape charts. Sometimes the non-branded or private label GBD did have a shape number on them. Mike

    British pipe; who made 'em?

I was right on the Arlington, and know I'm right on the GBD. Mike

    British pipe; who made 'em?

I believe the first two are GBD made. They are on the GBD shape chart. The two that are stamped Arlington were probably made by Arlington Briar, which was a huge pipe maker in the DC area. They made many private label pipes for shops all over the US. Mike

Advice-modifying a Decatur Industries Pipe Rack?

Just buy some "new" Deco racks. :D

What is a good brand of dress shoe?

I own mostly Alden and Allen Edmonds. Brooks Brothers sells Alden shoes under their own label. The Alden will run you $350-$500, but will last and last. You can send them to Alden for heels and soles, and they will also rebuild the shoes if needed. I believe that Allen Edmonds offers the...

    Hello (Again) From Georgia

I forgot all about this group, until I was cleaning up my bookmarks this evening. I was never very active here, and spent most of my time on Smokers Forums and Grayfoxonline, but after selling most of my collection in 2011 I haven't been very active in the pipe community. I kept about 250...

Advice-modifying a Decatur Industries Pipe Rack?

I have done this several times. I used a coping saw, as well as a hacksaw blade in one of those handles designed to accommodate broken blades. I finished off the edges with sandpaper and applied some Kiwi brown shoe polish. Quite happy with the results. Mike

    Any Charatan experts?

The X merely indicates that the pipe was not fitted with a DC mouthpiece. Mike

    Any Charatan experts?

Waste of time. Tad Gage has forgotten more about Charatans than that woman ever knew. Mike
