I often find the natural weight of my tamper is enough to do the business of settling the ash. I do drop some of the ash after about 30 minutes of smoking, to give the coals clear access to air.

I'm gonna jump in with a comment and a challenge. I've looked at that pic of Andie McDowell for five years and more now. I honestly do not think she was smoking that Dunhill... I think the smoke was blown in from someone off camera. She did smoke cigarettes at one point as I remember reading...

I've learned, the hard way, that compromise matters. Even so, one thing I won't compromise on again: We each have to accept the things the other likes. That means she has to accept I like briars and blends. Ideally, she'd be willing to join me in this quest.

All those places, plus, with your music skills, you need to go to Kennedy Center. I'd take a look at the Washington Post online to see what concerts and such are going on. There is some truly superb music made in DC. Then, have a bowl or 3 somewhere :)

The issue at one time for a Dallas show was the proposed it the same weekend as the then extant Kansas City show. Since we in KC were having a good run at that point, the folks in Dallas might not have had any makers, resellers, etc to provide tables for the public. Now, that same weekend...

There are other engineering factors I look at before the pipe cleaner test. Bottom dead center for the smoke hole, proper fit of stem to bowl, proper drilling of tobacco chamber. IIRC Greg Pease had a long post on ASP (years ago) about essential engineering.
