    Presbyterian Mixture

So I am still quite a novice pipe smoker. I will not do the disservice to you all and call this a review since I don't think I'm at a level yet where I should be reviewing anything so we can just call this a discussion. I've learned in the last couple years that I prefer non-aromatic blends...

    Most traditional English blend?

What is the most traditional English blend still around (or available) today?

    Still learning

Well, today was one step closer to bliss. I smoked a bowl of Squadron Leader in a Dunhill Group 3 billiard estate (the first decent pipe I had bought). I took it really slow, let it go out a few times and was rewarded. Almost no (just a little) aftertaste and when I started to get a tad queasy I...

    Still learning

So it’s a little over a year and a half I’ve been smoking pipes off and on. I got off to quite a rocky start and am still learning. I started off smoking only outside, but where I live is right off of a bay and quite windy. I smoked too hot and probably way too fast (average bowl was lasting 20...

    Ronson Whirlwind

Anyone here use a Ronson Whirlwind (1950's/1960's) as a pipe lighter? Any thoughts?

    If you had to . . . .

I like and smoke Prince Albert and Captain Black now so there you go.

    Large old Bertram

It has "80" stamped on the bottom as well as "S." I believe 80 means high grain and S signifies Senator which means 100 to 150 year old Algerian briar.

    Large old Bertram

I picked up a very large old Bertram billiard off ebay a couple weeks ago. It cost $15 shipped. It was dirty with a brown stem, but something about the shape and the grain spoke to me. I'm somewhat new to pipes (a little over a year since my first smoke) and I know I smoke too fast and haven't...

    History of Captain Black

Does anyone know the history of Captain Black? How long has it been around? I poked around for a couple hours and couldn't find anything online.

A year of pipe smoking in retrospect

So it's been exactly one year since I decided to take up pipe smoking. It's been an interesting journey. I'm an athletic 29 year old that grew up in a non-smoking household, yet I love and respect the past and have been described as "an old soul" by friends. I had only smoked a few cigars in a...

    Ridding burnt rubber smell

I bought an old GBD estate pipe with a "Tuscan Lip" vulcanite stem. I managed to clean the bowl and rid most of the mothball smell it had (it obviously sat in a closet for some time). I also cleaned the stem in oxyclean and polished it with Flitz. The stem now looks good, but has a terrible...

Did I make a huge mistake?

There's nothing wrong with Penzance other than it's extremely hard to find and once you've had it many other things seem a bit...the work I'm looking for...droll. I'm really enjoying the Ashton's Artisan Blend.

Did I make a huge mistake?

puros_bran - Bless you for recommending Ashton's Artisan blend! I bought a tin of the new Three Nuns to see what all the fuss was about...meh...I smoked it for about ten minutes and decided it did nothing for me. Not to waste the morning and chance for a smoke, I loaded my pipe with the...

Did I make a huge mistake?

So I started smoking a pipe last January. Prior to that I had smoked a few cigars over the years (probably under 10) and that was it. The first blend I tried was a local tobacconist's match for Dunhill Early Morning Pipe. It was too strong at the time (although it probably wouldn't be now)...

When did Kaywoodie become a drugstore pipe?

I purchased a Kaywoodie "Flame Grain" shape 22 estate pipe. It is a 3 hole stinger. The finish is very dull and dry at the moment and it looked and smelled like it sat in a box in the garage for the past 30 years or more. I just spent the better part of this evening cleaning the stem with...

    Hello from Northern California

I have just started my journey into pipe smoking. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. I grew up in a smoke free home and occasionally have dabbled with cigars in social situations in the past. For some reason I have felt compelled to begin pipe smoking. Perhaps it is related to my long love...

Newb question about how long a bowl should last

It does help. I was sitting on the front porch and it was pretty windy out. I packed the bowl pretty loose. I'm sure I was puffing as well. I think all of these things help explain why the smoke only lasted for a short time.

Suggested Mild Tobaccos to Start With?

I'm a total newbie. I was overwhelmed by the assortment of different tobaccos out there. I went to a local tobacco place and they gave me a way too strong English blend heavy it latakia. Just the smell of it in a plastic bag in my car was too much. I went to another place and they gave me a...
