    My Favorite Negative Tobacco Reviews

There is a particular tobacco reviewer on TR who often makes me laugh he reviews a tobacco he does not like. Thought I'd share some excerpts from some of his reviews just for grins. I did not include the names of the tobaccos in order to protect the innocent. *** I got this as a sample from...

    A good wake up tobacco?

In my TR review of Kendal Plug I specifically recommended it for the morning, mainly because some of the more subtle flavors and deliciousness only come through (for me at least) on a clean palate. It treats me best first thing in the morning, and goes well with coffee. If you like pure VAs, you...

First Cornell and Diehl order just arrived!!

I smoke too much variety to have an all day smoke, but out of your lineup, I would say Epiphany would be a great candidate. It's a delicious English blend with plenty of character but not strong or peculiar in any way. Keep us informed of your results!

    Dunhill Royal Yacht: a review

Thanks for the great review! Love the tasting notes. I think I may be in the same position with RY as you. I think it's actually very dependent on conditions, including the condition of one's palate. At times I love it, at times it's just meh. I always want to keep a tin or two around but it's...

    I just tried...to write a tobacco review.

Dude, thanks for your brutal honesty! Not many people have as clear a view of their own issues as you, and it's refreshing! Bottom line is - welcome to the ward! I mean, I count stairs and telephone poles. All the time. Anyway, no need to wow us with vocabulary. The best reviews are those that...

    A good wake up tobacco?

For some reason, even though I'm a latakia hound, I really appreciate a good straight Virginia in the morning. Anything good, like Wessex, GLP Union Square, FVF, etc. is a candidate.

All of my best friends are flakes.

Ever try pressing tobacco in a vice? Won't make a flake, because I think that requires some serious time and pressure, but it's a very interesting experiment. It can actually change the flavor profile of a blend, and make it richer and more intense, kind of like a flake. It becomes almost a...

    Park Lane Bengal c/o docwatson

I have had Park Lane's version (never had the original) and I do like it. But not as much as Lancer's Slices. I agree that you have to nurse it to get the most out of it. I can certainly recommend it for folks looking for a full Latakia mixture.

    H&H Magnum Opus

I think it's fantastic stuff! I've had one tin and enjoyed every nanosecond.

I just tried Rattray's Marlin Flake

Marlin Flake is probably my favorite blend from Rattray. Delicious from the moment I first tasted it. Now I add a couple tins every now and then to my orders just to be sure I have plenty on hand. BTW, JRCigars has 100g tins of Rattrays for $12.00.

Balkan / English / Sublime Tobaccos to Order?

1792 is far too aromatic for me so I avoid it like the plague. Also, I personally don't like Haddo's. You ought to enjoy all your other suggestions though. May I also suggest: G.L. Pease Samarra, Maltese Falcon, and Quiet Nights Dunhill 965 (a classic) Lancer's Slices (a Latakia bomb that's...

    Compton's of Galashiels

I'm beginning a tasting journey through all of the Compton's blends. I will be posting the results on Smoker's Forums. If anyone is interested in seeing the results posted here as well, I would be happy to oblige. This is similar to my Pease Pilgrimage I did last year. Some of you may remember...

G.L. Pease, Mc Clelland, Hearth and Home for newbs

Amen! A voice of reason for a beginning smoker. I first started out with aromatics back in the mid-90s and decided if that's what pipe smoking was all about, it's not for me. Thus began my affair with cigars. But many years ago I started back in with English blends and it was a whole different...

    Butt Kicking Tobacco?

One word: Tambolaka. Get it here: http://www.thetntshoppe.com/ Higher nicotine, I think, than the ropes and twists. Interesting and unique flavors too. Read the reviews here (it gets four stars): http://tobaccoreviews.com/blend_detail.cfm?ALPHA=T&TID=3857 Be warned...

Squadron Leader - First, second, third, etc., runners up?

Agreed. I also like Presbyterian (a lot). Skiff is similar but also hard to get ahold of. Also Peter Stokkebye's Balkan Supreme (but it has some cavendish). Tree Mixture is also a great blend. It has only Virginia and Latakia (Squadron Leader has orientals) but it's a good medium-flavored...

I just tried Peter Stokkebye's "Luxury Navy Flake."

Hey, if you don't like Perique, it's nothing to worry about! It's not a holy grail. Pipe smoking is all about enjoying what you smoke. Take me for example... I just plain old don't like burley. And I can't smoke aromatics. Tried many times. Even the "good ones" that others have recommended...

    Germain's Special Latakia Flake?

I like both blends, but Penzance still ranks higher in my estimation. SLF is similar in that it's also a crumble cake, and it does have some wonderful flavor. But the tins I've smoked have been inconsistent. The last tin of SLF I opened had a huge vein of light-colored leaf through the middle...

    Hal o the wynd

I don't have quite the same problem with Hal o The Wynd. My problem is I simply don't like it that much. But you might try Marlin Flake and Old Gowrie. These two excellent Rattray's blends are far superior to HOTW for me.

    Aged Full Virginia Flake

I actually dislike FVF when fresh, but aged it's an entirely different beast in my opinion (in other words, I love it). I think one year is the minimum. My stash now allows me to only smoke FVF that's three years or older. It gets smoother and richer with age and loses some harsh green notes...

    Alternative to Dunhill 965?

The thing that stands out to me in 965 is the cavendish. It has a very distinct flavor and effect on the blend. As such, I think Old Dublin is a good substitute as the cavendish there is also noticeable.
